Liverpool Challenge! What would you do?

Liverpool is in need, and you are the one they choose to lead.

What would you do? Keep in mind that we are not looking for a "Football Manager challenge", so the system of play is not that important, the same way that the starting eleven also does not make that much of a difference.

We are looking for game philosofy, what to do in Offensive Organization, Transition from attack to defence, Defensive Organization and Transition from defense to attack.

What would you do in the training grounds to acchieve those goals, what would be your priorities, what kind of players would take advantage and what would you tell the scouts to look for in the transfer market in January.

  1. The most important thing when entering a new club is to understand where your are. What makes the club vibrate. What is expected from the supporters. It doesn't really matter what you think you know about all the other time spent in other clubs: this is Liverpool!

You have to be a dominant team. High pressure, short spaces between lines, agressive zonal marking is a must. Liverpool cannot allow any adversary to control the game or pace in Anfield. Therefore, it has to sufocate the opponent and to have possession almost all of the time. for a team that defends this way, high levels of colective reaction in the moment that you loose the ball is key.

Also it has to be a team prepared mentally to play high on the field, with a lot of space in the back of the defence. It is extremelly important to control deep passes and it is mandatory to have a line defencing system that consistently puts rival forwards offside. In order to do so, it is very important to understand the game and to always control the adversary that has the ball. If our pressure is high and the ball is pressured it is highly predictable that the adversary will want to get read of the ball as soon as possible, without losing it in dangerous zones for counter attack. This means that our line defence should go as high as possible becausa mostly likely the opponent will put the ball long without much criteria. On the other hand, if the bal is not being properlly pressured, it means that the opponent with the ball has time to read the game and to define the best pass passible. Having this time available, he increases his probabillity of a good rupture pass to a team mate that is trying to gain deep spaces. In this situation, the defence should assume a colective reading to get back and follow the high speed player that tries to gain deepness.

Doing so, you can have a defensive model that is very zonal agressive, recovering a lot of balls in the organization areas of the adversary, very close to the goal, or to anule all their attempts to gain space behind our defence.

Offensively, Liverpool has to be a creative team, both colectivelly and individually. I believe the best way to attack is always having offensive cover, with players behind the ball line. The best way to attack today is to have as much players has possible inbetween lines of the adversary (between midfield line and defence line). I would adopt a model that allows the he line defender to play very high on the field, between those adversary lines. to give them the corredors, the wingers should be players with high technical quality that are confortable playing in the center corredor, geating ready to receive the ball between lines. The 1st phase of offensive organization should be with the 2 centra backs and the defensive midfielder in the same line, trying to passe the ball to the wingers and midfield players in the central corredor or to the line defenders in the external corredors. After the ball enters in between lines, automaticaly you have numeric superiority against the defensive line of the opponent. Quick rupture movements from wingers of line defencers to gain deep space and cross to the strikers is mandatory. This model allows you to have ball control, to gain space in the back of the defence and to penetrate the area with a lot of players close and ready to position to score.

I would prefer a 4x4x2 system, with the dinamics as mentioned. With a winger that feels confortable in the center of the field and the other one more agressive and strightforward to penetrate line defences. The defensive midfielder and defenders have to be good at arial space and with velocity to recover metters in the back of the defence line.

Hope to have given answer like you intended
