Defending Outnumbered

Costa Rica Vs Greece

5v2 and no goal!

Good defending or poor decision from the attacking side?

Let me know your thoughts!

  1. The defenders do what is possible to do, hold position and protect the center. There is a greek in front of the attacker with the ball, keeping him from make the pass to the greek in back of the defenders. But when that pass is possible, then the man with the ball makes a poor decision passing to the wrong side (the one where the defenders are turned to) and with poor technique, too slow, too open... if we wanted to pass to that man, he should have done it earlier. So, for me it's the man with the ball and the one from his team, in front of him, that were wrong. Thats my humble opinion!

  2. great defense and dummie attack. The guy with the ball should run into one of the defenders, fixing him, and then assist a teammate leaving the greeks in a 1x0 situation.

  3. In my opinion, since ther is 5 vs 2 the offensive 5 should always interchance ball as they move in order to unbalance the defenders movement and unity.

The problem of one of the offensive players running into one of the defenders is what we watched here, i.e., if the defender is smart, he will hold, hold, hold, and hold the space between him and the attacker, so that he can never be unbalanced or out of the play if the attacker passes the ball to other player.

Notice that the attacker passed the ball to another colleague. But the timing and the place was incorrect, because when passing to the right, the other attacker lost angle to progress to the goal.

Nevertheless, the other attacker players moved wrongly. They were very passive in terms of just running vertically in the field. The wingers could try to do some diagonals in order to confuse the defensive duo.

But in this case, in my opinion, I think the defensive attitude was great and they killed the attack just holding, holding, and holding their line!
